Is it ok to have Reflexology done while Pregnant?

I have a prenatal massage appointment tomorrow, and I also scheduled a reflexology treatment along with it. At first I just thought it was just extra time on my hands and feet (because they are so swollen!) and I really wanted to increase circulation and just have them massaged more, but after doing a little research there seems to be more than that going on then just relaxation. Does anyone know for sure if it's safe to have reflexology while pregnant? I'm 34 weeks along. Thanks!

  1. Hi April. I am not aware of any contraindications for the use of reflexology during pregnancy. Share your concerns with the massage therapist before you begin your session. Best wishes and good luck with your new baby.
  2. Hi there. In the first trimester reflexology is contraindicated. From there on it is quite safe but there are certain areas to go easy on and your therapist, if properly, trained will know about this. Reflexology is great for expectant mum's and I have had many pregnant clients that report it not only makes them feel good but seems to settle the little one as well. Enjoy ! 3. Is it OK to have your feet massaged while pregnant? Of course! Will it cure any ailements you have? Of course not.
  4. It won't hurt you because it doesn't do anything.
  5. Well reflexology has no basis in fact. It's really just a (sometimes) painful foot massage. The human body is not laid out with these reference centers in the feet like the reflexologists say they are. There is no biological plausibility in their claims whatsoever, I'm afraid. See http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/reflex.html for an examination of this topic in some detail. I doubt it will convince you otherwise, once you have made up your mind, but it is worth looking at. You have nothing to lose in abandoning the practice, and it will save you money. If you like foot massages, get a pedicure. They're quite pleasant and the stress relief has health benefits like anything that reduces stress.
